((Movie Review)) "Okja"

„Okja“ will bring a tear to every animal lover’s eye. When I pressed play and sat down with a snack, I never thought this movie would be so heartbreaking and emotional. I was not prepared for the rollercoaster ride of emotions that this movie would take me on.

If at all possible, I will try to tell you about this movie without spoiling it and giving too much away. Basically it is about a young girl who lives in the mountains somewhere in Asia with her grandfather. They were given a piglet to raise who was created to be a „super pig“.

There is an American company who is developing these super pigs (they were about the size of a truck). Once the pigs have grown, they will get picked up by the company and taken back. So this young girl and her pig, Okja, have this amazing bond. The beginning of the movie when you see them running through the forest together, finding food and playing made my heart so warm and fuzzy. The effort the filmmakers put in to capture those moments we share with our non-human animals did not go unnoticed by me! I loved the many subtleties and small gestures they created between the girl and her pig that all of us animal owners can relate to.

Suddenly things take a dark turn (I don’t want to ruin it for you) and the two are separated. Horrible things happen to Okja. Honestly, I would be very hesitant to show this movie to children – there were scenes where I felt like not watching what was happening on the screen. But at the end of the day, what was happening to Okja is what happens to so many animals (heck, and humans) every day.

This movie is a wake-up call. If you aren’t already a vegetarian, this might make you re-consider. I definitely recommend it because it not only shows the strong bond that humans form with non-human animals, but it magnifies the problems with how we grow, kill and consume meat.

Have you watched Okja? What were your thoughts? I would love to hear about it in the comments!
