„Only if we understand can we care. Only if we care will we help. Only if we help shall they be saved.“
– Jane Goodall
Seeing how many animals live their lives on earth – their only life – can shatter your hope for humanity. Their lives are filled with pain, torture and suffering. I am speaking of non-human as well as human animals. The pain is so large that it can be difficult to even comprehend how and why it is inflicted.
Who are the people causing this? Why? It is very easy to visualise ourselves torturing them as punishment for the way they are torturing others. However, this quote from Jane Goodall might bring some light on the situation. Maybe we should ask ourselves: how can we cause them to genuinely understand how what they are doing is wrong? Will they then slowly begin to care and be aware of the situation?
Maybe they grew up in an abusive home and never had a positive relationship with anyone – human or non-human. Is that the reason for their lack of emotion and compassion?
Being someone who gets mad very quickly at people who are not treating their animals well, I am trying my best to approach it calmly and explain to them WHY what they are doing is wrong. Abuse will not be tolerated of course, but most of the time people simply don’t understand.
Do you agree with Jane Goodall’s quote? I’d love to hear about it in the comments!
